Jennifer Nichols - Summer Missionary

I spent two months of this summer in South Asia on a mission trip as part of a traveling music and drama team. Our team was made up of 6 girls and 1 boy, luckily he survived the summer! We had 2 leaders, the rest of us were the ones performing. I played the guitar and sang, along with a little dancing and acting! I experienced things and saw things in South Asia that I never thought I would, I also ate and drank many things I think I can do without for the rest of my life!

Since I have been back people have asked me how my trip was, and I have no idea what to say to that because I can not simply wrap up my entire summer in only a few words. I can only answer them that my trip was amazing, God changed my life, and I will never see the world as I did before this summer again. It is amazing how God teaches you and grows you in ways that you never expect.

I took a book with me this summer called The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne (I very highly recommend reading this). I took this book thinking that maybe I would read it a little on the plane rides, but I never expected that God would use the book to speak to me so clearly. So through reading this book, the friends that we made, and the many things my team did this summer, God taught me many things. The one truth that He seemed to teach me over and over was about love, and about loving our neighbor as ourselves. It seems to be such a simple truth that we have learned about since we first began to follow Christ, but it is one that I have recognized we need to have a much deeper understanding of. (God allowed me to come to a deeper understanding of many things during my time in South Asia.)

God calls us to place others around us above ourselves, when we see someone in need we are told to help them in love. I also learned much about the Body of Christ, and what God desires for that to be by reading in Acts. I often read about how Christ Jesus, our Savior, was homeless and did not have many material possessions. I recognized how I so easily fall into the lie that having just that one more materialistic thing will satisfy me. Jesus is the only one who will fully satisfy us! I made many friends, some who are my brothers and sisters in Christ, and some who are not. I met many who our great God had already begun a work in. That’s the thing; God did not allow my team to lead hundreds of people to Christ or to do any great miracles. He simply allowed us to be a part of a great work He had already begun before we arrived, and one that I know He has and will continue each and every day. I honestly can not even explain many things to you about my summer even by writing several pages. Our God is so great, He is above all other Gods, and one day the whole world will recognize Him for who He is. Our God is full of love and forgiveness, and He is so good!

Note from Kristin

There seems to be alot of confirmation lately that this life that I am living is not about me. A couple of weeks ago I went to camp and Ryan Dalgliesh preached over Isaiah 48:11-
"For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it,
for how should my name be profaned?
My glory I will not give to another."

In every action taken in my life I either honor or defame God. And I am called to "be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect" and to "be holy for He is holy" since "He has given us everything we need for life and godliness".

Then this last weekend I went to Matt Chandler's church as he encouraged us through Eccl. 3 to enjoy the season that we are in and realize that He is working out everything for His glory. We were not mere mistakes, but were intricately woven as encourged in Psalm 193:13.

And finally, Monday, I was reading the life of Sarah in the bible and the Lord had given Abraham a covenant that he would be the father of a great nation and would have a plethera of descendents, but he kept Sarah barren until she was 90 years of age. Why did the Lord allow her to go through such a long wait? For his glory! He wanted to make sure that when His time came for the promise to be fullfilled, no one would be able to deny that this was indeed God's going.

I pray that the Lord continues to teach me that this life is not about me. It is not about my comfort or what people think about me. Yet, my reputation should be a reflection of Christ. He makes things beautiful in His time. May the Lord sanctify me in His truth and grow me in trust and in faith and turn my eyes from myself to see Him and His beauty.

MORE SIGNIFICANT

Posted by Picasa

Philippians 2:3 says, "Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others MORE SIGNIFICANT than ourselves. (emphases mine)

This year the focus on our ministry will be to count other MORE SIGNIFICANT than ourself. Every thing we do will center around this focus with the prayer that our efforts will point others to a relationship with Christ.

Keep reading the post made today to discover some of the ways we are counting others MORE SIGNIFICANT!

The beginning of a new semester offers many opportunities; so many opportunities that you are usually worn out by late October. That’s what FOCUS is all about. What are you going to focus on? Simply, FOCUS is a worship, learning, ministry experience for college students. This year’s theme is “be ready”, and it comes from 1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”

Mark your calendars!!

Since 1991, Charlie Hall has been traveling, songwriting, and sharing life with people in his home of Oklahoma City, and across the United Sates, and even across several oceans. He is part of Bridgeway Church in OKC, and a leader in the Passion collective of visionaries. With imagination, the grace of God, and a desire to have heart-level conversation and interaction, Charlie is on a pilgrimage to the heart of the Father. He welcomes you into the music of that journey.

Matt Chandler serves as lead pastor of The Village Church in Highland Village, TX. Along-side his current role as lead pastor, Matt is involved in church planting efforts both locally and internationally through The Village and various strategic partnerships. Prior to accepting the pastorate at The Village, Matt had a vibrant itinerate ministry for over ten years where he spoke to hundreds of thousands of people in America and abroad about the glory of God and beauty of Jesus.
